Kim Kardashian is donning a Hollywood fashion icon on the small screen in All’s Fair. The reality TV star and entrepreneur is channeling Elizabeth Taylor in the new season of All’s Fair, displaying her Old Hollywood glam in a look inspired by the legendary actress with opulent outfits for her character, Allura Grant.
The ensemble was revealed in a new trailer for the Hulu legal drama, where fans and fashion aficionados alike gawked over the eye-catching black velvet cape embroidered with jeweled scorpion details and lined in ivory silk, which the actor donned for Princess Grace Kelly’s 40th birthday bash in 1969. It’s one of the most notable items in the late silver-screen legend’s storied and often over-the-top wardrobe.
A legendary Hollywood fashion moment returns
The garments in question date back to the design of the original prototype, the so-called “Scorpio Evening Cape”, created by Tiziani Roma. Karl Lagerfeld was, as reports, a freelance designer working for the fashion house at the time, but his exact contribution to the creation of this cape remains unclear.
The actress donned the cape to the festivities at the Scorpio Ball, the party, which paid homage to Princess Grace Kelly. The Hollywood star complemented the dramatic cape with her famous 69.42 carat Taylor-Burton diamond necklace for an overall look that epitomized the jewelry and high-end fashion Hollywood icon was known for.
The cape also made an appearance at the 2011 Christie’s auction for the Elizabeth Taylor Collection. It fetched $60,000 before the buyer’s premium, for a total of $74,500. It is unclear whether the Kardashian outfit is the actual piece or a replica made for the TV show. The aired footage features Sarah Paulson using the unique design, indicating that several were made for filming.
The fashion reference is also more personal for the star, who has previously revealed she’s a huge fan of Taylor’s and had been following the Hollywood star and her jewelry and legacy. Back in 2011, she interviewed Taylor for Harper’s Bazaar which was the last time Taylor did an interview before her untimely death that same year.
Kardashian has also shared how learning from Taylor’s attitude toward her possessions influenced her. The actress viewed her famous jewels as items she was temporarily looking after, rather than things she permanently owned, and this perspective inspired Kardashian’s own approach to wearing valuable pieces.
It is that link that elevates this recreation beyond a mere costume throwback, connecting the dots between all that Kardashian has shared about her love of vintage fashion and Taylor’s lasting impact on celebrity style, jewelry collecting, and dressing for the red carpet.
A no-nonsense divorce lawyer with a wardrobe that showcases her affluence, bravado, and stage-presence. The series, created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, revolves around a gang of gorgeous, successful female attorneys who tackle work conflicts, office romances and high-stakes cases.
Kardashian collaborated with stylist Soki Mak to create Allura’s unique fashion style. Her wardrobe features vintage designer items and bold silhouettes, setting her apart from typical TV depictions of lawyers.
